챨즈 디킨즈, 1812년 2월 7일 - 1870년 6월 9일)는 영국인 작가이자 사회 비평가이다. 그는 세계에 가장 널리 알려진 소설 속의 인물을 만들어냈고, 빅토리아 시대를 대표하는 영국의 소설가이다. 1833년, 디킨스는 "보즈"(Boz)라는 필명으로 한 잡지에 단편을 투고했는데, 그 단편이 채택되자 이를 시작으로 여러 잡지에 단편, 소품 등을 발표했다. 그 후 1836년 이들을 모은 《Sketches by Boz》(보즈의 스케치집)가 출판되면서 디킨스는 문단에 데뷔했다. 그 후, 1837년 출판한 장편소설 《The Pickwick Papers》[3]은 뛰어난 유머로 큰 인기를 얻었고, 1838년 《올리버 트위스트》 역시 큰 인기를 얻으며 작가로서의 지위를 확립했다.
